Welcome to Chinatown x Mott Street Girls: Made in Chinatown Tours

We are so excited to partner with Mott Street Girls to bring you our very first Made in Chinatown walking tour, where we delve into the rich history of Chinatown and how iconic spots like Hop Lee and Grand Tea Imports shaped and impacted the people and culture of today’s Chinatown. In the 1870s, Chinatown’s growth exploded after Chinese immigrants came east to escape the violent discrimination of the Chinese Exclusion Act in California. Explore the very streets that became the center of early Chinatown, like Mott, Pell, and Doyers Street, as well as some of the businesses that have partnered with Welcome to Chinatown. In addition, everyone will have an opportunity to stop by the Made in Chinatown pop-up at the end, exclusive to these tours.

Limited spots are available, offering 2 different routes for each weekend. Tours are rain or shine.

Drawn Together: Stories of Resilience and Renewal in NYC Chinatown

We're so proud to present this art exhibition in partnership with the Pearl River Mart and Asian American Arts Alliance. From graphic designer and illustrator Sammy Yuen, DRAWN TOGETHER is an array of exquisitely detailed line drawings depicting historic New York City Chinatown businesses, landmarks, and community organizations.

These neighborhood fixtures, from the oldest (Transfiguration Church, first established in 1801) to the newest (Yu & Me Books, opened in 2021), run parallel to the history of Manhattan's Chinatown — from its establishment in the 1870s as Chinese immigrants, facing discrimination elsewhere, clustered on a handful of streets, to rising in a world redefined by a pandemic and renewed economic hardship, xenophobia, racism, and violence.

To Sammy, the name “Drawn Together” has great significance. “Although these are my pieces, I couldn’t have done the show without the Mott Street Girls, Asian American Arts Alliance, and Pearl River Mart,” he says. “It’s really about all of us working together to heal and make a brighter future.”

A portion of the proceeds from this exhibition goes back to these Chinatown businesses and to the Chinatown Mural Project, a not-for-profit dedicated to bringing culturally appropriate large-scale murals to the NYC Chinatown area and beyond.

10th Anniversary Pvt. Danny Chen’s Death

Pvt. Danny Chen, a Manhattan Chinatown son was a 19 year old American soldier found dead in Afghanistan on October 3, 2011 after weeks of racial maltreatment and hazing by his superiors. The community in Chinatown rallied for justice for Danny, signing thousands of petitions and participating in rallies and marches calling for a fair and thorough investigation. Community members went to D.C. and the Pentagon to meet with elected leaders and military officials and attended multiple court-martials in North Carolina. Eight superiors were subsequently convicted in connection with Danny's death and removed from the Army. Danny's family is grateful to the community for their support during this ordeal. On the 10th anniversary of their son's death, they want now to help Manhattan's Chinatown which is struggling economically with the Covid-19 fallout. Danny's family hopes you enjoy the tour and afterward take advantage of the discounts from Danny's favorite places!

Anti-Asian Racism's Impact on Chinatown Tourism

In what ways has anti-Asian racism impacted tourism, especially in Asian neighborhoods, like the vibrant Chinatowns across North America? How have these communities and neighborhoods been affected by the double-edged sword of the pandemic and racism? How is the travel and tourism industry implicated in the rise of anti-Asian racism, and what role does the industry have in supporting these local communities?

Join us for this free event hosted by Wanderful, where we will be speaking alongside leaders from across North America’s largest Chinatowns, including Historical Chinatown Tours’ Judy Lam Maxwell (Vancouver) and Chinatown Magic Tours & Events’ Cynthia Yee (San Francisco). We’ll tackle these difficult questions together and attempt to carve an equitable and just path forward.
