Kuih Cafe

Kuih Set (Abok Sago, Pumpkin-Ube Lapis, and Pulut Tai Tai)

Kuih Cafe opened on February 15th, 2020, by a mother-daughter duo that wanted to share authentic Malaysian cuisine with New Yorkers! They are best known for their namesake, kuih, rice-based desserts popular in Southeast Asia. In addition, they serve a variety of Malaysian desserts, snacks, and dishes.

An immigrant from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Veronica Gan left a career in fashion design to start a family in New York. After caring for her family for many years, she decided to start her own small business as she couldn’t find the Nyonya-style kuih she grew up eating. It began as a hobby to keep a piece of her home country close to her. After spending six years perfecting her recipes in her home kitchen and selling homemade desserts to customers across the city, she finally opened a brick-and-mortar store in Chinatown.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit a month after opening, and she had to close her new business temporarily. She failed to qualify for a Paycheck Protection Program loan and had to lay off her small team. Luckily, local community organizations like Send Chinatown Love stepped in to help fundraise for their expenses, and they were eventually able to reopen for takeout.

Veronica only uses natural Southeast Asian ingredients such as pandan leaf, blue pea flower, ube, red sweet potato, and virgin palm sugar. Free of artificial food coloring and preservatives, their kuih are beautiful to look at and full of interesting textures, flavors, and aromas. Some of our favorite items include the abok sago, pineapple tart cookies, salty duck egg cookies, Nyonya chang, durian burnt cheesecake, and durian sundae.

Tip: They’re only open Fridays to Sundays. They change their menus weekly, so please check their Instagram account for the latest offerings before going!
